Technical PM/SQL DB Analyst

Company: Siemens Issaquah
Location: Redmond, WA
Employment Type: 9+ Month Contract
Wage: hourly

Description:
This position is with the world’s leading software company, headquartered in Redmond, WA.

Technical Program Manager/DB Analyst
Position Description: Looking for a PM/database expert to help drive data warehousing and reporting. You will become a part of a growing Web Analytics team which is working hands-on with very large databases (VLDB - hundreds of millions of rows, terabytes of data) which literally represent every customer interaction with our sites. You will be figuring out how best to expose this data to stakeholders and team members, while also working behind-the-scenes to ensure that data is accurate, to troubleshoot problems, and to help guide DB management, operations, monitoring, and more.

Responsibilities:

  • Writing and tuning SQL queries to enable high-performance reporting and bulk data extraction
  • Creating and troubleshooting reports using SQL Server Reporting Services
  • Working with business stakeholders to define reporting requirements and to help them prioritize requirements given schedule and resource constraints
  • Working w/ development teams, who are feeding data into our databases, to ensure their apps are instrumented correctly
  • Ensuring our daily processes (data loading, aggregation creation, etc.) work well—including improving monitoring and automation/scheduling to provide increased reliability at lower cost
  • Troubleshooting instrumentation and database problems
  • Identifying and investigating reporting optimization opportunities (e.g. better indexes, improved partitioning, clustering, scheduled aggregations, OLAP, etc.)

This is a good position for a developer or DBA looking for a broader role or interested in Program Management, because the job will be a mix of hands-on technical work with PM activities. In other words, you will both work “in the trenches” improving DB performance, optimizing queries, and building reports—but also will be working with stakeholders to define requirements, prioritizing requirements against schedule and resources, coordinating work of developers and testers, and driving longer-term technical strategy.

    Required skills include:
  • Very strong SQL skills, because writing and tuning SQL queries—for defining reports, for ad-hoc analysis, and for troubleshooting—will be a big part of this job.
  • Experience with the unique problems of building, querying, and managing large (50M+ rows) databases
  • Ability to identify table, index, and other schema changes needed to improve performance while balancing read and write workloads
  • Ability to easily read a SQL Server query plan use it to optimize queries and/or database schema
  • Good written and oral communication skills and ability to write quick, clear emails and short specifications
  • A pragmatic approach to problem-solving which balances long-term technical direction with short-term stakeholder needs

Candidates should also have many of the following skills: (The position will eventually require most or all these skills, so you will be expected to learn quickly to fill any gaps)
  • Experience with SQL Server overall, and SQL Server Analysis Services, SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS) and SQL Server Reporting Services in particular
  • Management and performance strategies for very large databases, including partitioning, clustering, data migration/replication, backup, etc.
  • Experience with OLAP and familiarity with alternate aggregation approaches for scenarios which OLAP does not address well
  • Experience with C# and .NET Framework programming is preferred for unusual cases where T-SQL may not be the best choice for an analytics task
  • A working knowledge of HTTP, HTML, and ASP.NET, which will be used to diagnose website instrumentation problems and to recommend and review application-layer instrumentation solutions

It’s likely our team will be expanding beyond Redmond to also include offshore engineering in India and/or China, so experience managing offshore engineering projects is a plus, though not required.

At Siemens IT Solutions & Services, Inc. ([URL Withheld]), our consultants demonstrate an ability to interface with all levels of Management and Customer contacts, as a Strategic Business Partner. Each has a proven history of generating outstanding business results.

If you meet the above skill set/experience requirements and are interested in working with a world-class technology company, Apply Today!

Along with the prospect to grow your career with a financially stable, International industry leader, you will also have the unique opportunity to say to your customers, "We're SIEMENS, We Can Do That!"
